Okay, it's rant time coming. So you might want to duck into your bomb shelter or wherever it is you hide when I get on one of my tirades. This article is WAY overdue and needs to be read by everybody who is into Internet marketing. The reasons will become quite obvious after you have finished this. Are you a puppet? Don't know? Well, I'm going to spell it out for you in no uncertain terms.
You hear it everyday if you hang out at the top forums online. It goes something like this. “If you want to really have success online, you need to…” and fill in the blanks. You know what I'm talking about. Some hotshot marketer comes out with his “bible” of how to market and the herd goes running off to try these methods without giving any thought to what they're actually doing or if these methods will even fit in with their current business model. It's like sheep to the slaughter. Maybe I should have titled this article, “Stop Being A Sheep.” I don't know. Either one is pretty bad.
So anyway, are you? Is this what you do? You go read a forum post or one of my articles and then go off to conquer the world with your newfound knowledge? Hey, don't get me wrong. If somebody with experience shares his wisdom with you, trying it out is fine. However, it's important that you understand what it is you're doing and why you're doing it. If you read an article on CPA networks and have no interest in CPA, why would you bother doing it? Do you even have a website that will get approved by a CPA company? That's right, you have to get approved. They don't just let you promote CPA offers.
Too many marketers get caught up in the hype of the “flavor of the day”, dive in head first and don't really take the time to see if this new thing fits in with their current business model or is even something that they have the skill to do. Somebody who reads an article on how much money you can make as a copywriter who then goes out to get clients before he even learns HOW to write copy, is just looking for trouble. On top of that, if you try everything under the sun, you're going to spread yourself so thin you won't get anything done.
So stop being a puppet. Sit down and make a game plan and only do the things that will fit into that game plan. Don't buy a book on AdWords if you have no intention of using pay per click advertising or don't have two nickels to rub together. Use your head.
After all, you're not Pinocchio.
