The PCI DSS was created to be a standard and a measure against which merchants can be judged and a tool to help them achieve the necessary level of security.

PCI compliance is required of any company that stores, processes, or transmits sensitive credit card data. The PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) was created by the five major credit card companies and consists of 12 requirements that merchants must conform to. These are not necessarily easy requirements to fulfill, nor are they necessarily cheap. PCI compliance can, in fact, be an impressive drain on your resources.

To answer this question we can look at some of the current examples of what can happen if you don't place the proper importance on data security.

The TJX company is one of the most high profile cases in recent history. Starting around July 2005 hackers were able to spend about 18 months exploiting various vulnerabilities in their system to download nearly 100 million credit card numbers. But it didn't end there. These hackers were also able to intercept information that was transmitted when a return was processed. This information is often even more sensitive than what is transmitted for a normal transaction.

What did this cost them? Between legal fees, regulatory fines, and other costs, some estimates put the monetary costs over a hundred million dollars. Other estimates put that number much, much higher.

The costs don't end there, though. There are other, more detrimental costs that are, unfortunately, less quantifiable. These are the costs that include the loss of reputation and the increase of suspicion. When word gets out about their lack of security, how many customers will rethink their desire to do business with them? Herein lies the real detriment to future success.

Investigations continue, but it seems that the TJX company was not keeping up with PCI compliance measures. They were transmitting unencrypted data across wireless networks which means that any hacker that intercepted those transmissions can easily read that information. This is not good.

So what can most companies expect if they suffer a breach? Merchants can be fined up to 500,000 dollars per incident. If, after the breach, the merchant still does not reach PCI compliance, they may be subjected to more fines, which could include monthly fines and periodical audits as well.

Data security measures cannot be procrastinated, and they should always have a high priority in your business. Despite the inherent costs that come with PCI compliance, it will, in the end, be worth it.

There is another option for companies who do not believe they have enough time or resources to accomplish PCI compliance in-house. Many companies have emerged that specialize in data security and PCI compliance. Outsourcing payment processing and data security and storage is becoming a popular option for many companies. Strive to build new organizational capability that can be transformed into revenue or an enhanced ability to achieve the organization's purpose and goals.

• Align your work-group's vision with other work-groups, departments, and functional units by focusing on the things you hold in common. While each work-group may have a different function in the overall organization, its activities should be aligned to achieve a common purpose and the goals of the overall organization. Alignment of purpose and goals and focusing on what an organization has in common are the core differences between being a “group” of people and being a “team.”

• Communicate the trade-offs of actually accomplishing change to work-group members. For example, if your goal is to increase productivity, then this will require more time and energy from group members and increased resources may not always be immediately available until the work-group demonstrates its increased productivity to top managers. But positive change often brings increased visibility with senior managers that can result in professional advancement for those involved in the change.

• Manage “meaning” for people both in and out of your work-group so changes are interpreted through the lens of your work-group's vision. The purpose of culture (any culture) is to teach people how to “see” the world, so make sure that the actions and interactions of your work-group are properly explained and interpreted to top managers and peers so it's clear how your vision links to the overall organization's purpose and goals. Remember that people tend to see exactly what they expect to see, so help to shape those expectations for people both in and out of your work-group.

• Only engage in constructive conflict with other work-groups or managers, and only do this when you have to for the best interest of the overall organization. While constructive conflict can create synergy, creativity, innovation, and improvement, the destructive conflict that comes from criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling that is displayed in meetings, e-mails, and other human interactions frustrates and undermines an organization's ability to achieve its purpose and goals.

• Cultivate allies who will support the change and form open coalitions to ensure that change is sustainable. Focus on winning the support of those who are skeptical about the change by involving them in the process or showing them how they make similar improvements in their work-groups. If the change agent follows the first seven guidelines described above, then other managers at all organizational levels will begin to line up to support the change and voluntarily put their shoulders to the wheel of increasing its momentum and ensuring its sustainability.

• Create a concrete, tangible path-forward with credible next steps and a well-defined picture of the value-added that the change will bring to the overall organization. Having established the long-term vision of the change and achieved some initial results that show change is possible, it is important to define what constitutes a “win” or how we will we know when we've arrived. It's also important to map out the behaviors, skills, and process changes that will be necessary to carry the change initiative all the way to the finish line.

• Find and use measurements to reinforce the fact that change is actually happening and also to accelerate change. Use existing measures (or create new ones) to disconfirm the old ways of seeing the work-group's level of performance and to build quantitative evidence that the change has happened and that it will be sustainable. Identify exemplars (examples) that convincingly demonstrate the value that the change is adding to your work-group and the overall organization.

Okay, it's rant time coming. So you might want to duck into your bomb shelter or wherever it is you hide when I get on one of my tirades. This article is WAY overdue and needs to be read by everybody who is into Internet marketing. The reasons will become quite obvious after you have finished this. Are you a puppet? Don't know? You hear it everyday if you hang out at the top forums online. It goes something like this. “If you want to really have success online, you need to…” and fill in the blanks. You know what I'm talking about. Some hotshot marketer comes out with his “bible” of how to market and the herd goes running off to try these methods without giving any thought to what they're actually doing or if these methods will even fit in with their current business model. It's like sheep to the slaughter. Maybe I should have titled this article, “Stop Being A Sheep.” I don't know. Either one is pretty bad.

So anyway, are you? Is this what you do? You go read a forum post or one of my articles and then go off to conquer the world with your newfound knowledge? Hey, don't get me wrong. If somebody with experience shares his wisdom with you, trying it out is fine. However, it's important that you understand what it is you're doing and why you're doing it. If you read an article on CPA networks and have no interest in CPA, why would you bother doing it? Do you even have a website that will get approved by a CPA company? That's right, you have to get approved. They don't just let you promote CPA offers.
